Why Linux?
Servers Running Linux
Linux is the most robust, reliable, and secure operating system in the world. The majority of servers running websites, databases, file servers, clusters, HPC high-end systems, and mainframes all utilise Linux as the operating system of choice for their applications. Linux computer systems are typically Servers or Workstations. It is its ability to perform well under heavy workloads which makes Linux the most favoured operating system in the world, outperforming its competitors such as Microsoft, even if on older hardware. Furthermore, the modular nature of Linux facilitates customisation, as well as system optimisation for specific needs.
Variants of Linux
Indeed, there are many different versions of Linux, some of the most popular being HP Linux, Solaris, SP2, AIX, Fedora, Redhat to Ubuntu & Debian. Each one has its individual strengths and weaknesses and the choice of which one to adopt depends on each individual and corporations needs and goals.
Opensource Linux
Linux has always had strong roots in the open-source community, from which many of its applications derive, for example Fedora with respect to Redhat Enterprise Linux. The GNU organisation is also significant in producing many third-party tools that are widely used on Linux systems. Its open-source roots mean Linux begins as free, for anyone to share, distribute and make improvements to its source code. The lack of any license at inception is part of the appeal, and the transparent code ensures many of the greatest minds in the world get to review and contribute and tweak its code for the kernel and OS.
Linux is particularly strong on the security front too, with patches for low to critical level vulnerabilities, bug fixes and advisories. This ensures it is harder to hack and less susceptible viruses and malware. Of coarse the onus is on the system administrators to ensure the patching of their servers is done a regular basis.
